Personalised support for ADHD in Children
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is increasingly recognised in children, yet many are diagnosed without exploring the nutritional and biochemical factors that may be contributing to their symptoms. Behaviour that looks like "hyperactivity" or "inattention" can actually be driven by nutrient deficiencies, gut dysbiosis, food sensitivities, blood sugar imbalances or inflammation. At Urban Wellness, we work with parents to understand the root causes of ADHD and support your child's focus, regulation and wellbeing through nutrition and functional medicine.
What is ADHD in children?
ADHD is a neurodevelopmental condition affecting how the brain regulates attention, impulse control and executive function. Children with ADHD may:
-
Struggle to focus or sustain attention on tasks
-
Be hyperactive, fidgety or "always on the go"
-
Act impulsively without thinking through consequences
-
Have difficulty following instructions or organising tasks
-
Be emotionally reactive or struggle with emotional regulation
-
Have trouble with sleep, eating or transitions
-
Perform inconsistently—sometimes capable, sometimes struggling
Important: ADHD is real and neurodevelopmental. However, many children who receive an ADHD diagnosis also have underlying nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, sleep issues or gut dysbiosis that, when addressed, can significantly improve focus, behaviour and emotional regulation.

How Nutrition & Functional Medicine Can Help ADHD
ADHD medication can be helpful for some children, but it addresses symptoms, not root causes. A functional medicine approach explores what may be driving ADHD-like symptoms:
Nutrient deficiencies
Low levels of iron, zinc, B vitamins, magnesium, omega-3s and vitamin D are directly linked to attention, impulse control and mood regulation.
Gut health
The gut–brain axis is critical for neurotransmitter production (serotonin, dopamine, GABA). Dysbiosis, inflammation or food sensitivities can worsen ADHD symptoms.
Food sensitivities
Some children are sensitive to sugar or specific foods (like gluten or dairy) that trigger hyperactivity, inattention or mood issues.
Blood sugar imbalances
Erratic blood sugar from poor diet can mimic ADHD: restlessness, difficulty concentrating, emotional dysregulation and fatigue.
Sleep and circadian rhythm
Poor sleep or irregular routines worsen attention, impulse control and emotional regulation—and can be mistaken for ADHD.
Stress and nervous system dysregulation
Chronic stress, anxiety or unprocessed emotions can present as ADHD-like symptoms in children.
By addressing these factors, many children experience significant improvements in focus, behaviour, sleep and emotional wellbeing—sometimes even reducing or eliminating the need for medication.
Common Signs Your Child May Have Nutritional or Functional Factors Contributing to ADHD-Like Symptoms
-
Extreme tiredness or energy crashes after sugar
-
Digestive issues: constipation, loose stools, bloating or stomach pain
-
Poor sleep: difficulty falling asleep, restless sleep or waking frequently
-
Food cravings or pickiness; limited diet
-
Eczema, allergies or frequent infections (suggesting gut or immune issues)
-
Symptoms that vary day-to-day or are worse after certain foods
-
Emotional reactivity, meltdowns or mood swings
-
Symptoms that improve with structure, movement or time outdoors

Important note
This programme is not a replacement for ADHD diagnosis or medication. Many children benefit from both medication and nutritional support—what matters is a tailored, whole-person approach.
