Personalised nutrition and functional medicine support for low body weight and unintentional weight loss that is not related to an eating disorder.

You may have lost weight following an illness, be struggling with a poor appetite, have digestive symptoms that make eating difficult, or find that despite your best efforts, you're unable to maintain or regain weight.

For some people, a medical condition, treatment or period of poor health has affected their appetite or nutritional needs. For others, digestive symptoms, food intolerances or a restricted diet have gradually made it harder to eat enough.

We help you understand your whole health picture, looking at what may be making it difficult to maintain your weight and how we can support you to meet your nutritional needs.

When maintaining your weight becomes difficult

Low body weight or unintentional weight loss can develop for many reasons that have nothing to do with an eating disorder.

You may be experiencing:

  • unintentional weight loss

  • difficulty regaining weight after illness

  • difficulty maintaining your usual weight

  • poor or reduced appetite

  • feeling full very quickly

  • digestive symptoms that make eating uncomfortable

  • difficulty eating enough throughout the day

  • a restricted diet because of digestive symptoms or food intolerances

  • low energy, weakness or fatigue

  • loss of strength or muscle mass

  • nutritional deficiencies

If you've been losing weight without trying, it's important to speak to your GP to explore whether there may be an underlying medical reason.

Why might I be struggling to maintain or regain weight?

Sometimes several factors are making it difficult to get the nutrition your body needs.

POOR APPETITE

Illness, medication, stress and other changes in health can all affect appetite and make eating enough difficult.

DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Nausea, reflux, bloating, abdominal discomfort or changes in bowel habits can make eating uncomfortable and sometimes lead to people eating less to avoid symptoms.

FOOD INTOERLANCES & RESTRICTED DIETS
Removing multiple foods because of symptoms or suspected intolerances can make it increasingly difficult to get enough energy, protein and essential nutrients.

MEDICAL CONDITIONS & RECOVERY FROM ILLNESS

Long-term health conditions, medical treatments and recovery from illness can affect appetite, digestion, nutritional requirements and your ability to maintain weight.

STRESS & MENTAL HEALTH

Stress, anxiety, low mood and difficult circumstances can affect appetite and regular eating, even when there is no eating disorder.

NUTRITIONAL NEEDS

When your intake has been limited or your weight has been low for some time, we can look more closely at whether you're getting enough energy, protein and nutrients to support your health.

Looking for eating disorder or ARFID support?

This page is specifically for low body weight and weight restoration where an eating disorder is not the underlying reason for your low weight.

If you're struggling with an eating disorder, ARFID or other difficulties with food and eating, we offer specialist nutritional support through our Eating Disorders & Relationship with Food service.

How we can support you

Understand your whole health picture
Your first session gives us time to explore your weight history, appetite, current food intake, digestive symptoms, health history, medication and any medical conditions or investigations that may be relevant.
Create a personalised plan

We'll bring that information together into practical recommendations to help you increase your nutritional intake and support weight restoration, while taking into account your appetite, symptoms, food preferences and what you can realistically manage.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include nutrition, lifestyle, supplements and functional testing where appropriate.

Work together over time

Most clients work with us over three months, giving us time to review how you're getting on, discuss what's changing and adapt your recommendations as we learn more about you. Longer-term support is available where needed.
