Iron and your brain: why low iron can affect your mood, focus and memory

Iron isn't just about energy, it's one of the raw materials your brain uses to make the chemicals behind mood, focus and motivation, which is why low iron so often shows up as low mood or brain fatigue before it shows up as anything else.
We see iron issues come up again and again in clinic, usually because someone's bloods came back "normal" but they still don't feel right (remember normal doesn’t always mean optimal for that individual). Understanding what iron actually does in the brain explains why.

What iron actually does in the brain
Iron is a cofactor for the enzymes that make dopamine, serotonin and noradrenaline, the neurotransmitters behind motivation, mood and focus. Without enough iron, your brain can still technically produce these chemicals, just not at the level it needs to keep you feeling clear, steady and motivated.
Dopamine specifically depends on iron to be made in the first place, and dopamine is a key driver of motivation and focus. When ferritin is low, dopamine production drops with it, which is why low iron so often shows up as slower thinking and a flattened sense of drive, even when nothing else on your bloods looks obviously wrong.
Iron also supports myelin, the protective coating around nerve fibres that keeps signals moving efficiently between brain cells. When myelin production slows, so does processing speed and mental clarity.
Why this shows up as mood and focus first
Standard blood tests usually look at haemoglobin, which only drops once iron deficiency is well established. Your brain, though, is sensitive to iron status long before that point. This is why so many women feel flat, foggy or unmotivated with bloods that come back fine, the marker that would actually explain it, ferritin, often isn't tested at all, unless your doctor specifically suspects iron deficiency, such as unexplained fatigue, or an abnormal FBC (Full Blood Count) showing anaemia, which is late stage by then as it is the final, advanced stage of iron depletion!

Who's more likely to be affected
Midlife women are particularly at risk, between years of heavier periods, reduced absorption as digestion changes with age, and increased demand during busy, high stress years. If you also have low stomach acid, lack of adequate protein in the diet, coeliac disease, or ongoing gut symptoms, that adds another layer, since iron has to be properly absorbed in the gut before your body can use it at all.
What to actually do about it
